Should i go to uw

UW—Madison is not just a big teaching enterprise. Why should that matter to a freshman? In my experience and contrary to the popular stereotype world-class researchers are often the best teachers. They have a passion for their subject that is unmatched and often find innovative ways to help students learn about some of the most interesting and newest ideas in their field.

And research and instruction interact in important ways on campus. Getting involved as a research assistant on a project is one of the best ways I know of to learn how information is put together and analyzed.

Some students and parents select small schools because of the perception that there will be more personal attention. If I may slip into economist-speak for a second, I have found that despite our macro size, UW—Madison offers very micro-level student services. Every day I continue to be impressed by the hard work, dedication and time UW—Madison faculty and staff members commit to teaching and nurturing students.

Madison really is a great place to live. It has good biking, a beautiful lakefront, great sports, lots of good hang-out space on campus, student groups that fill every possible interest, and a casual, friendly atmosphere. But not everyone took it to heart. Elsewhere in the U. And their SAT scores are usually higher. International students often have math SAT scores that outpace all U.

Both Quinn and Jacobs, the private college counselor, say many families are failing to make the connection between state budget cuts and a lower admission rate.

While the numbers are still changing, so far this year about 56 percent of in-state applicants have been admitted, compared with 62 percent last year. Although every public university in Washington is facing the same cutbacks, they are not all trimming their freshman class. Washington State University boosted the number of in-state freshmen it admitted this year by about 13 percent, expecting to enroll about more freshmen in fall than it did last year, said John Fraire, vice president of enrollment management.

To make room, the school will have to stretch housing and classrooms, he said. Western Washington University saw a decrease in the number of students who applied this year, perhaps because the school cut its recruitment efforts as a cost-saving measure. It expects to enroll fewer freshmen as a result. Central Washington University expects fewer freshmen to enroll — in part because tuition is going up — and plans to recruit more out-of-state students next year. Cheer for the Huskies! Ask for help.

Have backup classes ready when you go to register and make sure you write down their SLNs beforehand in case you have to make a quick adjustment to your schedule. Each lecture has a slightly different SLN, so be careful! Take photos. Write it down. Jot down memories and quotes in a blog, a journal, or even in the notes app on your phone. Make healthy choices. There are refilling stations for your water bottle all around campus.

A little can go a long way. Fail forward. This is a catchphrase at UW for a reason. No matter how well you prepare, how hard you try, or how carefully you follow the last 19 tips, you will most likely experience failure at some point here before you graduate. Learn from them, grow from them, and you will be better because of them.
