Just look at the plethora of superhero movies these days and you can see how much our society values and loves heroes. What makes certain people take heroic actions in the face of great danger? When you think about heroism, several recent examples that were in the news might spring to mind.

After the tragic theater shooting in Aurora, Colorado, during the summer of , three women who survived the shooting revealed that they had been saved by their boyfriends.

The three men had shielded their girlfriends with their own bodies and died as a result. In another shooting at a Sikh temple, one man died trying to disarm the shooter while another suffered serious injury as he tried to help. On January 2, , approximately 75 people waiting at a busy subway station watched as a young man suffered a seizure and then fell from the platform onto the subway tracks. Onlookers watched in horror yet did nothing, but a man named Wesley Autrey took action. Handing his two young daughters to a stranger, he leapt down onto the tracks hoping to have time to drag the man out of the way of an oncoming train.

When Autrey realized that there was no time to move the other man, he instead held him down between the tracks as a train passed over the top of them. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost. Heroism is something that is deeply valued across cultures, but how exactly do we define a hero? What is it that inspires some people to take heroic action?

While researchers know a great deal about what causes people to perform actions described as evil, our understanding of what makes people heroes is not quite so clear and definitions of heroism may differ from person to person. According to the Heroic Imagination Project HIP , a non-profit organization that focuses on teaching people to become heroes in their everyday lives, heroism involves a behavior or action on behalf of another person or for a moral cause.

How do psychologists and other heroism researchers define heroism? Here are just a few of the many suggestions put forth by various experts:. After polling a number of people, we discovered that heroes are perceived to be highly moral , highly competent , or both. More specifically, heroes are believed to possess eight traits, which we call The Great Eight.

These traits are smart, strong, resilient, selfless, caring, charismatic, reliable, and inspiring. Allison and George R. Heroes are conceptualized diversely, and no rigid boundaries exist in this social category. The most prototypical features of heroes, identified in our research, are bravery, moral integrity, courageous, protecting, conviction, honest, altruistic, self-sacrificing, selfless, determined, saves, inspiring, and helpful.

Heroes are doctors, professors, judges, nurses, police officers who take responsibility for our health, our safety, the education of others, often for a modest salary.

They are entrepreneurs who manage to run their companies and provide jobs for people who deserve to work, often despite endless bureaucratic headaches, or in some cases threats from organized crime rings. Heroes are survivors of terrible tragedies who strive to help others who share a similar destiny, teaching them that they too can overcome hard times. They are journalists or artists who use their art and knowledge to tell a story, to shine a light, to serve and encourage others. Heroes are people who protect our environment and our artistic treasures from unscrupulous opportunists.

They are retired people who get miserly pensions after 40 years of work, but still manage to live with dignity and dedicate themselves to being grandparents.

Heroes are people who walk through life on their own paths with their heads held high, without giving up their self-respect or their identity, despite the discrimination they suffer because of their sexual, religious, racial or political preferences. They are people who volunteer their time to help neglected seniors, exploited women, forgotten children, convicts, prostitutes, and people who are all alone.

The time has come to change our model of heroism. This means that being a hero is no longer a mythical classification reserved for super heroes in comic books, or a few legendary men and women, or worse still, peacocks who spend all their time strutting in front of the mirror or under the spotlight.

Trish Comment by Actually, with a 40 second duration it's better to use it just before fights start. Because of people not wanting to be the first to get hit by range, most teams face eachother across the arena for a short while, deciding on what to do.

Comment by Very powerful as far as instance. In shadowlabs we used on all bosses, got 1st boss down to half before fear. Second boss was a little harder due to timing, didn;t want when we were fighting each other. Comment by In raids this would be the iwin button. In groups of rogues, dps warriors and hunters this really shines. The Broken teaches the draenei the know-how to become a shaman.

Therefore, they'd like to dogmatize them how heroic they are.. Comment by does this stack with flurry??? This spell does NOT reduce the global cool down timer which stays steady at 1. Contrary to what was mentioned above, this is generally not a good idea to blow early on. You will most likely want to save this until burst dps is needed and your tank has a fair bit of threat lead.

Comment by Why is it that Bloodlust Horde version has 'Rank 1', while Heroism Alliance version doesn't have a rank? Comment by Eprahim Your best weapon when you and your raid group will fight bosses. Comment by Tools Just tested this in botanica, Heroism does not affect the shaman ressurection spell, Ancestral spirit, but a priest in group said it did affect his ressurection spell.

Comment by veno3 Heroism is going raidwide in WotLK, however once cast you cannot benefit from it again for 5 minutes to prevent chaining it. Comment by Does this affect the CD of spells? Comment by Replica It doesnt say this in the tooltip but this has a yard radius. So if you pop this in like AV, people in the other side of the map wont get the buff.
