Why are sinks earthed

Within your kitchen sink are a variety of pipes. If these are made of metal, such as cast iron or copper, then the possibility exists that electrical charges could be directed into your home through your sink. These electrical charges could lead to severe injury depending on the extent of the electrical power.

Most sources of electrical charges as associated with the sink come from either static electricity or lightning strikes in a storm. Thus, with some kitchen setups, to reduce the risk of potential electrical shock, your plumber will opt to earth the sink. This simply means redirecting these electrical charges to the ground from your home. This would be grounded due to the length of the pipes. Even though they attach to your kitchen sink, most water pipes can go several feet past their original point of installation.

These days, plumbers have moved away from using cast iron and copper pipes, as well as other metal alternatives. Polyvinyl chloride, more commonly referred to as PVC, has replaced most of this metal. Instead of using earthing or grounding exclusively, plumbers have also since switched to favoring dielectric unions as necessary.

With a dielectric union, electrolysis rates are reduced through connecting pipes of two materials. Re: Ground wire on kitchen sink yeah lightning strikes can conduct through the metal pipes, ad to the kitchen tap so they grounded it in those days, to prevent the most expensive household appliance from getting shock, wile washing the dishes. Also static electricity which is also possible due to water flow. Average Distance. The most common kitchen counter height is 36 inches, but it can vary from 30 to 45 inches.

Rough-in plumbing is usually placed at a somewhat lower height, between 18 and 20 inches, to accommodate varying counter heights and sink depths and leave plenty of space for the P-trap and necessary connections …. Metal pipes are required by code to be electrically grounded, and this is normally done by grounding the cold water inlet pipe to the home.

Note that a plumbing system with PEX or other forms of plastic water supply pipe does not require any kind of electrical grounding. Kitchen sinks are not grounded although if one has a food disposal, whose case is grounded, depending on the connection to the sink, that ground may carry through. Sometimes a metal plumbing supply pipe from a municipal water system or a well is used as a ground and hence any contiguous metal pipe could be grounded. The idea of Supplementary Bonding in a bathroom is that you bond all the metallic services where they enter the bathroom, to the Earth Wires of each electrical circuit that enters the bathroom.

Also has anyone seen those metal urinals? That made me think! Does it make the bathroom any safer? To me the risks outweigh the benefits, but then what do I know? Reply to Tony C. Looking at the consumer unit or other electrics won't help you. Wilko - Esteemed. Reaction score 6, That one must be preserved.

Des 56 - Esteemed. They are getting few and far between but metal wastes were once very common, there is occasion when these require bonding, keep it in mind. Midwest - Esteemed. Deleted member I was once faced with a sink being installed by the kitchen fitter on a site which actually stated on the packaging Try getting Kev to understand that there's no requirement to 'earth' a sink when some knob in China has printed that on the box.
