Orphaned as a baby, he was brought up by an uncle who would find instilling discipline into his charming, self-willed nephew a challenge. The young Burr fought with distinction in the War of Independence and started on an almost lifelong pursuit of women. He became a prosperous lawyer in New York City and went into politics, both of which created a poisonous rivalry with Alexander Hamilton.
In the s Burr was a United States senator and from he was vice-president to President Jefferson, but he was not picked to run again with Jeffferson in The animosity with Hamilton reached a point at which Burr challenged him to a duel. Each man fired one shot. Hamilton missed, but Burr did not. Hamilton fell, mortally wounded, with a pistol ball lodged in his spine, and died the following day.
But unlike Hamilton, whose wife worked for years to secure his legacy, Burr left no close family defend his place in history. Hamilton left behind 33 volumes of his writings, Jefferson Burr left only two.
Tantalizingly, Burr claimed that some of the papers lost in that wreck contained notes for an unauthorized biography of the revolutionary generation that would chip away the myths already calcifying around his fellow founders, and reveal the actual men. Senate race in Burr became vice president, but when he was dumped from the ticket before the election of , he decided to run for governor of New York. His fellow New Yorker, Hamilton, once again manipulated his defeat, and Burr lost by a large margin. Fed up with Hamilton attacking his character, Burr demanded an apology. Hamilton refused to apologize, and the pair exchanged a series of letters which eventually culminated in arrangements for a duel.
Though the events of the duel are unclear, Burr received the brunt of the blame. The actual events of the Burr-Hamilton duel have been mired in controversy for more than years.
